Akela Projects

 

Project No.: 0040  Area in camp: Akela Project Name: Remove Trees and Brush Assigned to: (Troop 12-SE-BC April 19 completed 50%) (Troop 939-WE-BC May 17) 2008

Project Description: Remove the trees and brush on the outside of the fence to a distance of 10’ clearing around the outside of the fence that is around the lake at the camp’s treatment plant.  Drag the trees and brush deep into the woods, At the trees on the far side of the lake, leave a 5 ft clearing outside of the fence. Note-the far side of the lake is at the edge of the shot gun range.

Back 40 Projects

 

Troop 152-OC-HO

 

Project No.: 0013  Area in camp: Back 40 Project Name: Hole for Frost Free Water Valve Replacement  Assigned to: Troop 152-OC-HO 2008

Project Description: On the road (tree farm road) past Prophet's Rest, is a frost free water valve to be replaced.
Dig up the old frost free down to the main water pipe supply line, insure the hole at the pipe supply line is 4 ft around or more to permit an adult to cut out the old valve and replace with new.  Hole may be deeper that 4', slope sides of hole to prevent cave in and mark hole with colored tape. (valve work to be done by others)

Project No.: 0074  Area in camp: Back 40 Project Name: Destroy Multi-flora Rose - May 5 or 17 Assigned to: (Troop 152-OC-HO & Troop 177-WA-BC May 17) 2008

Project Description: In most locations multi-flora rose will not have to be handled. Use loppers to cut the branches of the rose bush into short pieces and let them lay flat on the ground where they fall. Saw off the stump at ground level. Uproot the stump with a shovel or mattock. The Area Coordinator will assign an area for your unit to remove multi-flora rose when you check in Saturday morning. Check with the Area Coordinator to receive your "Thorn Buster" token and patch, for Scouts and adults that worked more than 4 hours on this project.

Project No.: 0048  Area in camp: Calumet Project Name: Tent Pole Repair Assigned to: Hold for Troop 335-OC-GP 2008

Project Description: At the garage locate by the tree farm, pull all of the tent poles out of the rake, inspect and repair as needed (in replacing the pegs on top of the pole, use glue before installing.  then paint the top 6 inches, yellow and reinstall into the rake.  Give a count of the poles upon turning in your paper work at the end of the day.

Project Description: Walk Hutch's Trail, clear downed trees, re-flag with surveyor's tape and report any problems on trail.

Project No.: 0031  Area in camp: Camp Wide Project Name: Picnic Table Repair Assigned to: Troop 558-OC-GT 2008

Project Description: Starting on the peninsula area, inspect all the campsite's picnic tables, repair or replace wood as need, continue inspection and repair to The Ridge, Magic Mountain, Central Camp, then Back 40 campsites (est. 8 to 10 tables needing repair).

Project No.: 0121  Area in camp: Camp Wide Project Name: Cut & Split Firewood Assigned to: (Hold for Troop 60-OC-GW & Troop 935-WE-BC May 17) 2008

Project Description: Cut / split downed trees and haul to campfire areas (Bridge Builders - Akela - Morehead) as directed. Down trees located between Tecumseh campsite and the water tower, also down trees located just in the woods on the right side of this campsite and other locations.

Central Camp Projects

 Troop 74-OC-GT

 

Project No.: 0009  Area in camp: Central Camp Project Name: Refinish picnic table at Outdoor Skills Assigned to: Troop 74-OC-GT 2008

Project Description: There are 6-8 picnic tables around the Outdoor Skills area that need to be sanded down and sealed. The tables have some carvings and graffiti on the surface that needs to be sanded off. The tables then need to be painted. Some tables may require minor physical repairs. The tables are spread around the area including in the wooded teaching areas behind Jones Lodge.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIALS: Sandpaper, paint, some hardware as required for repairs.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: MATERIALS: Sandpaper for electric sander, with extension cord if used.
TOOLS: Gloves, old cloths, rags, paint brushes, hand tools as required for repairs, and an electric sander is not required but is very highly recommended.
LABOR: Few special skills are required for this project. It should take about
5-7 hours to complete, depending on the size of the unit.

Project No.: 0122  Area in camp: Central Camp Project Name: Move Yellow Bricks Assigned to: Troop 74-OC-GT2008

Project Description: Move yellow bricks out of wooded area behind the Jones Lodge to the edge of Outdoor Skills yard.  Move yellow bricks to stock pile behind Maintenance Building. ( After May 3 GTW, one pile remains to be move with a lot of broken pieces scattered in the area.  Move whole and pieces to the Maintenance Building unless other wise directed.)  General clean up of area where brick were.

Project Description: Re-construct Snake Trail fence from Pugwug campsite to Dinning Hall.  Put new post in ground and lash poles to them to make a new fence.

Project Description: Install new Split Rail fence on the north end of the Administration Building Parking Lot (120') and on the south end of the parking lot, remove old fence, as directed by Ranger Skip.

Troop - 4073-KI-BC

 

May - Project No.: 0007  Area in camp: Central Camp Project Name: Frog Flag Pole Assigned to: Troop 4073-KI-BC 2008

Project Description: A flag pole needs to be set at the new Bernie Myers Pavilion for use by the FROG program. Pole is located at the site, dig 12”dia hole, 2ft 6in deep, place in form (provided), mix concrete and pour into form, then set the 4 anchor bolts. Install rope on to the flag pole. (caution, do not mix to much water into the concrete mix.)

Project Description:  A large area in Central Camp has been disturbed due to improvement projects.  Rake the area to remove stones and prepare seed bed.  Plant grass seed and straw area.

Project Description: At the water front staff campsite, level the ground in 4 areas,  combine two staff plate forms to one with a railing in the center then install onto the level ground, Then run a underground power supply to each of the new plate forms.

Project No.: 0015  Area in camp: Central Camp Project Name: Central Camp Beautification - Bass Pond  Assigned to:  (Troop 12-SE-BC April 19 - 70% completed) (Troop 1-SE-BC May 3) Hold for Troop 197-OC-GW May 17 2008

Project Description: 1.  Remove trees and brush from Bass Pond dam to ground level.  Drag brush into trees on west end of dam.  Weed whip weeds on dam. (Item #1 - 50% completed as of May  3 about 125' not worked on)

2. Cut brush and weed around shore line of the Bass pond at water level and remove any obstructions preventing the flow of water out the dam's overflow area.  Drag brush into trees on west side of pond. (Item #2 Completed)

Dinning Hall Project

Project Description: Report to Dining Hall at 8:30 AM to clean and set up tables and chairs for lunch, eat lunch at 11:00 AM, serve lunch at 12:00 PM, clean up after lunch and any other work needed in the Dining Hall.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIALS: Food, lunch supplies, Windex, Paper Towels.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: LABOR: 35 Scouts plus adult leaders from one or more Units. SKILLS: Ability to follow directions, transport food on trays, be clean and pleasant. This is an ideal project for units with younger scouts. Five older Scouts will be selected to work in kitchen.

Maintenance Building Projects

Project Description: Unfold tents - repair "small" tears by ironing on pre-glued canvas patching (inside and out side) on side walls, roof and door flaps.  Re-fold tents.  Place repaired tents in racks.  Re-fold tents needing "large" repairs (1 foot or larger) and stack in repair pile.

May  - Project No.: 0092  Area in camp: Peninsula Project Name: Paint tent frame outriggers Assigned to: Troop 139-SE-BC May 17, 2008

Project Description: Starting at Chippewa campsite and progressing to Dungannon, Erie, Ottawa, Shawnee then to Wyandotte. Paint the steel out riggers green, these site have had a prime coating done over the past 2 years. Do not paint Miami nor Rila Ridge as they have not been primed.

The Ridge Projects

 

Project No.: 0019  Area in camp: The Ridge Project Name: Ditch cleaning along Eco-Lodge & Akela Road Assigned to: (Troop 16-SE-BC May 3) & (Troop 60-OC-GW May 17 Contact them to let them know how much work remains to be completed) 2008

Project Description: Clean ditches along road from "Trading Post driveway" - Eco-Lodge Road (north side) to the red gate at Akela Road. Clean ditch from the Yellow gate (1st) on Akela Road to yellow gate by School House Pond. Place dirt and leaves from ditch on upper side of ditch back fare enough so it will not roll back into ditch. Cut small brush and trees 8'+/- back of ditch. Pull brush and trees into woods.
