Back 40 Projects

 

Project No.: 0080,  Area in camp: Back 40,Project Name: Paint tent frame outriggers Assigned to: Troop 575-OC-GC 2010

Project Description: Paint steel pipe outriggers for summer camp tents at Back 40 campsites.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIALS: Paint (oil base primmer), paint thinner

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: TOOLS: Gloves, wire brushes, paint brushes, rags, old cloths. LABOR:  Scouts with adult supervision. Do as many campsites as you can.   Report the campsites completed to the Area Coordinator. (All day project)

Project No.:0074,  Area in camp: Back 40, Project Name: Destroy Multi-flora Rose & Grape Vine - May 1  Assigned to: (Troop 225-OC-GC 17 Scouts/ 4 Adults May 1)(Troop 94-NE-BC 2 Scouts/1 Adult May 1 2010

Project Description: Multi- flora Rose - In most locations multi-flora rose will not have to be handled. Use loppers to cut the branches of the rose bush into short pieces and let them lay flat on the ground where they fall. Saw off the stump at ground level. Uproot the stump with a shovel or mattock.

    Grape Vine - Cut the grape vine off at ground level and six feet above the ground.  An adult leader to spray "Roundup" on the grape vine stump.

    The GTW Coordinator will assign an area for your unit to remove multi-flora rose and or grapevine when you check in for the Good Turn Weekend. Check with the GTW Coordinator to receive your "Thorn & Vine Buster" token and patch, for Scouts and Adults that worked more than 4 hours on this project.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: TOOLS: Gloves, eye protection, loppers for each participant. One bow saw, shovel and mattock for about every 10 people using loppers. LABOR: One or more units. Any number of Scouts with adult supervision. SKILL: Persistence (All day project)

Project No.: 0118, Area in camp: Back 40, Project Name: Clear Brush Assigned to: Troop 127-GS-BC 2010 - N

Project Description: : At the area between Hutch’s Grove and the open area across from the Back 40 shower house, clear all brush to the ground and trim all low tree branches up to 8 ft off of the trees in an area marked with yellow ribbon.  Build large brush piles back in the woods outside of the marked area

Dining Hall Project

 

May 1 - Project No.: 0043,  Area in camp: Dining Hall, Project Name: May 01 - Dining Hall Service Assigned to: (Troop 220-OC-GC 8 Scouts - 6 Adults), (Troop 182-OC-GT 12 Scouts - 6 Adults2010

Project Description: Report to Dining Hall at 8:30 AM to clean and set up tables and chairs for lunch, eat lunch at 11:00 AM, serve lunch at 12:00 PM, clean up after lunch and any other work needed in the Dining Hall.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIALS: Food, lunch supplies, Windex, Paper Towels.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: LABOR: 35 Scouts plus adult leaders from one or more Units. SKILLS: Ability to follow directions, transport food on trays, be clean and pleasant. This is an ideal project for units with younger scouts. Five older Scouts will be selected to work in kitchen.

Camp Wide Projects

Project No.: 0110, Area in camp: Camp Wide, Project Name: Shower houses Assigned to: Troop 575-OC-GC 2010 - N

Project Description: Because of additional spring events, we need a troop to open up and clean the shower houses located on the Peninsula and by Pugwug campsite (The Ridge). Main water valve will be open, will need to reinstall drains and open valves, swipe out building, and wash down walls, floor, sinks and toilets.  This job can be done any time May 1st or after. Will need an adult with basic plumbing skills.

Project No.: 0008,  Area in camp: Camp Wide, Project Name: Re-Mark Hutch's Trail Assigned to: (Troop 138-GS-BC 8 Scouts/ 3Adults May 1) (Troop 25-GS-BC 4 Scouts/4 Adults May 8) 2010

Project Description: Walk Hutch's Trail, remove existing blue metal trail markers and nails from live trees.  Remark trail using white paint as directed.  Clear downed trees, report any problems on the trail and note on the project sheet the section of trail completed.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIALS: 2" wide scraper, 2" paint brush, 2"x6" marking guide and water based white paint.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: TOOLS: Gloves, claw hammers, vice grips, wood chisel, other nail removal tools, paint rags, bow saws, loppers, chain saw operated by adult.  Anyone operating a chain saw on Buckeye Council property must have completed BSA Chainsaw Safety Training course.  LABOR: Many Troops

Maintenance Building Projects

Project No.: 0005,  Area in camp: Maintenance Building, Project Name: Left to Repair 12+/- ripped tents at Maintenance Building Assigned to: (Troop 60-KI-BC 2-19-10) (Troop 1-GS-BC 5-1-10) (Troop 152-OC-GT 5-1-10),   2010

Project Description: Unfold tents - repair "small" tears by ironing on pre-glued canvas patching (inside and out side) on side walls, roof and door flaps.  Re-fold tents.  Place repaired tents in racks.  Re-fold tents needing "large" repairs (1 foot or larger) and stack in repair pile.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIAL: Canvas patches.  TOOLS: Scissors, 4 household irons, power cords.

Peninsula Projects

 

Project No.: 0009,  Area in camp: Peninsula, Project Name: Wyandot Campsite Pavilion Assigned to: Troop 2040-SB-BC

Project Description: Construct 24' x 24' permanent pavilion in Wyandot campsite on prepared pad. This project is a coordinated effort by troops camping at Wyandot during summer camp

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIALS: will be ordered through Council but paid for by troops sponsoring pavilion

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: MATERIALS: Lumber, shingles, gravel, nails and other necessary hardware and building materials TOOLS: Auger, hammers, saws, gloves, safety glasses etc.
LABOR: Adults, older Scouts, Likely to be finished with minor finishing touches in one day

The Ridge Projects

 

Project No.: 0019,  Area in camp: The Ridge, Project Name: Ditch cleaning along Eco-Lodge & Akela Road Assigned to: Troop 335-OC-GP  2010

Project Description: Clean ditches along road from "Trading Post driveway" - Eco-Lodge Road (north side) to the red gate at Akela Road. Clean ditch from the Yellow gate (1st) on Akela Road to yellow gate by School House Pond. Place dirt and leaves from ditch on upper side of ditch back fare enough so it will not roll back into ditch. Cut small brush and trees 8'+/- back of ditch. Pull brush and trees into woods.

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit: TOOL: Gloves, shovels, rakes (garden and leaf), loppers, bow saws. LABOR: Two or more large Troops all day.

Turkey Ridge Projects

 

Project No.: 0068,  Area in camp: Turkey Ridge, Project Name: Re-roof Adirondacks  Assigned to:  534-OC-GW 2010

Project Description: At the Whippoorwill camp site, remove the roof shingle on two Adirondacks and install new roofs

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Buckeye Council: MATERIALS: Shingles, roofing nails, felt paper and drip edge

Materials, Tools and  Labor provided by Assigned Unit:  TOOLS: Hammers, squares, chalk line, roofing shovels, tarp, safety glasses, ladders, other hand tools for roofing, and proper safety equipment for roofing.
LABOR: 8 hours "The Ashtabula Roofing Crew."
